million >> the nfl's wild card weekend draws to an exciting finish. with a matchup of two surprise playoff teams led by rookie quarterbacks. the seattle seahawks and quarterback russell wilson flexed their muscles today on their way to a 24-to- fourteen victory over robert griffin the third and the washington redskins. former cal bear marshawn lynch ran for 132 yards and a score as seattle broke an eight game postseason losing streak on the road they'll go on to face the top-seed atlanta falcons next sunday. in the early game. the baltimore ravens played host to the city's former franchise. the indianapolis colts it was the final home game for star linebacker ray lewis. who is retiring after the season. the ravens sent him out a winner. by beating the colts 24-9. the loss cut short an impressive season for the colts. who went from last place to the playoffs. as their head coach chuck while battling leukemia. baltimore travels to denver to take on the broncos next saturday. and of course the other big game on saturday - san francisco 49ers host the green bay packers!

's what they think about junior seau seau. it showed chronic encephalopathy. most of the nfl players brains have shown this. these are people who wanted their brain studied. they are a little bit of a biased group. clearly, it is a significant issue. stage four being anger, um pu e impulsivity. >> so the knocks to his head changed his personality too? >> what we've learned from this is the only thing that can cause this problem, known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is like an alzheimer's disease that strikes young people i saw some first-hand. went to the lab where they are looking at this. that chronic traumatic encephalopathy can be caused by concussions and sub con cuss sieve hits. seau didn't have a lot of concussions but he did have a lot of hits to the head tichlts not just concussions but just repeated blows to the head over a very long career. >> how many hits to the head and you get this condition? >> we don't seem to have an absolute number. this is still relatively emerging science. a couple years ago, we weren't hardly talking about this. we do seem to know that th

football took a new turn today. a brain analysis found former n.f.l. great junior seau was suffering from c.t.e., a degenerative brain disease, when he committed suicide last may. the national institutes of health said there were abnormalities widely linked to repetitive blows to the head. seau had been a star linebacker for 20 years before retiring in 2009. in economic news, american express announced it's cutting about 5,400 jobs as it restructures. the reductions will come mainly in the company's travel business. and on wall street, stocks had a good day, after reports suggesting the economic outlooks in china and europe may be improving. the dow jones industrial average gained more than 80 points to close at 13,471. the nasdaq rose nearly 16 points to close above 3,121. the standard and poor's 500 hit another five-year high, topping 1,470. those are some of the day's major stories. now, back to judy. >> woodruff: a series of bombings across pakistan killed over 100 people today and injured scores more. a short while ago, ray suarez talked by phone to "new york times" reporter declan wal
